Sleep Training 101: Methods and When to Start
An overview of popular sleep training approaches.
Sleep training is optional, but many families find it helpful. Here's an overview.
When to Start
Most pediatricians recommend waiting until 4-6 months when babies are developmentally ready.
Popular Methods
- Ferber (graduated extinction): Check-ins at increasing intervals.
- Cry It Out (extinction): No check-ins. Fastest but hardest.
- Chair Method: Sit by crib, gradually move further away.
- Pick Up/Put Down: Comfort when crying, put down when calm.
What All Methods Share
Consistent bedtime routine, putting baby down drowsy but awake, and parental consistency.
Important: Talk to your pediatrician before starting any sleep training.
