Adoption Shower: Celebrating Families Formed Through Adoption
Etiquette and ideas for adoption celebrations.
Adoptive families deserve celebration. Here's how to do it thoughtfully.
When to Have It
Timing varies with adoption. Options: after match is confirmed, after placement, or after finalization. Ask the family what feels right.
Invitation Wording
"Join us in celebrating [Parents] as they welcome [Baby] to their family" or "A shower of love for [Family Name]."
Gift Considerations
- Same registry items as any baby
- Consider age-appropriate items (not all adopted children are newborns)
- Memory books designed for adoptive families
What to Avoid
- Don't call it a "gotcha day" (many in the adoption community dislike this term)
- Don't ask intrusive questions about birth parents
- Don't treat it as different from any other baby shower
