How to Write Baby Shower Thank You Notes
Templates, timing, and tips for thoughtful thank-yous.
Thank-you notes are non-negotiable after a baby shower. Yes, even if you thanked everyone in person. Here's how to write them without losing your mind — including templates you can customize.
The Timeline
Aim to send thank-you notes within 2–3 weeks after the shower. If baby arrives before you finish (it happens!), you have a grace period — people understand. But try to get them out before the birth if possible.
Handwritten vs. Digital
Handwritten is still the gold standard. But in 2026, a thoughtful email is acceptable for:
- Coworkers or acquaintances
- Virtual-only attendees
- Anyone who explicitly prefers digital communication
For close friends and family: handwrite them. It takes 5 minutes and means more.
What to Include
Every thank-you note should have:
- Greeting: "Dear [Name],"
- Thanks for coming: Acknowledge their presence (or their gift if they couldn't attend)
- Specific gift mention: Name the exact item — "Thank you so much for the Hatch sound machine"
- How you'll use it: One sentence about why you're excited about this gift
- Warm close: "Can't wait for you to meet the baby" or similar
Templates You Can Use
For a specific gift:
Dear [Name],
Thank you so much for the [specific gift] — it's exactly what we needed! We can't wait to [use it for X / see the baby in it / put it in the nursery]. It was so wonderful to celebrate with you at the shower. We're grateful for your generosity and support as we prepare for this new chapter.
With love,
[Your name]
For a cash/fund contribution:
Dear [Name],
Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our [diaper fund / nursery fund / 529]. Your support means the world to us as we prepare for baby's arrival. It was wonderful to have you at the shower — your presence made the day even more special.
With gratitude,
[Your name]
For someone who couldn't attend:
Dear [Name],
Thank you so much for the beautiful [gift] — we were so touched that you thought of us even though you couldn't be at the shower. We can't wait to use it and think of you! We hope to see you soon after the baby arrives.
Warmly,
[Your name]
Tips for Getting Them Done
- Keep a gift log: Have someone track who gave what during the shower. You'll forget otherwise.
- Batch them: Write 5–7 at a time while watching TV. Don't try to do all 30 in one sitting.
- Prep in advance: Have cards, stamps, and addresses ready before the shower.
- Use In9Months: Our thank-you tracker shows who you've thanked and who's still waiting.
