Grandparents' Guide to Modern Baby Gear and Safety
What's changed since you had kids (a lot).
Baby care has changed significantly. Here's what grandparents need to know.
Sleep Safety Changes
- Babies sleep on their backs ("Back to Sleep")
- No blankets, pillows, or bumpers in crib
- No co-sleeping on couches or soft surfaces
- Room-sharing (not bed-sharing) recommended for first 6-12 months
Car Seat Changes
- Rear-facing until at least age 2 (preferably longer)
- Car seats expire (check the date)
- No puffy coats under straps
Feeding Changes
- No cereal in bottles
- Solids start at 6 months (not 4)
- Honey not safe until age 1
- Allergen introduction has changed (earlier is better)
Be open: Guidelines change based on research. What was safe in 1990 may not be safe now.
